Sporting Kansas City 2 Monterrey 5 (agg 2-10): Tigres await in Champions League final

Monterrey set up an all-Mexican CONCACAF Champions League final with Tigres UANL after dismantling Sporting Kansas City 5-2 in the second leg.

Miguel Layun scored a stunning free-kick as Monterrey twice came from behind to beat hosts Sporting KC on Thursday and claim a crushing 10-2 aggregate victory.

MLS outfit Sporting KC faced an uphill battle in the semi-final clash following their humiliating 5-0 defeat to the three-time champions in Guadalupe last week.

Gerso Fernandes put Sporting KC ahead on the night thanks to his sixth-minute opener at Children s Mercy Park, though their slim hopes of reaching the final were dashed by Rogelio Funes Mori 14 minutes later.

Back on the map and earning letters from ladies, Tabarez embraces Uruguay´s heritage

Just a short amount of time in the presence of Oscar Tabarez would be enough to transform even a hardened cynic into a true believer in the enduring virtues of the beautiful game.

Uruguay s 71-year-old coach has seen it all.

In 1990 he led the Celeste at the World Cup in Italy, securing the national team s first victory on the big stage since 1970, before bowing out to the hosts in the round of 16.

That long overdue 1-0 win over South Korea in Udine, tantalising respite for the country s long-suffering fans, was Uruguay s last at the World Cup until Tabarez returned to the country s top job.

After 16 years at club level, working for the likes of Boca Juniors, AC Milan and Velez Sarsfield, Tabarez was not content with a token, one-off success the second…

Arsenal 3 Valencia 1: Lacazette brace turns first leg on its head

Alexandre Lacazette scored twice as Arsenal came from behind to beat Valencia 3-1 at home in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final.

Mouctar Diakhaby headed Valencia into an early lead at Emirates Stadium on Thursday but within 14 minutes the Gunners had turned the tie around.

Lacazette first finished off a swift counter-attack involving Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before heading home Granit Xhaka s cross to put Unai Emery s men in front.

And the Spaniard, a three-time winner of the competition with Sevilla, will take a two-goal lead back to former club Valencia for next week s second leg after Aubameyang struck late on.

West Brom´s Pulis rules out Ivanovic move

West Brom manager Tony Pulis has ruled out a move for Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic ahead of Tuesday s transfer deadline.

Ivanovic has been widely linked with Russian side Zenit but reports over the weekend suggested Pulis was eager to hijack that switch and take the Serbia captain to The Hawthorns.

But, asked on Monday about any imminent arrivals, the former Stoke boss categorically stated Ivanovic who has won the Premier League twice and the FA Cup three times since signing for Chelsea in January 2008 would not be joining West Brom and neither would Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson.

He said: Ivanovic? That s a definite no.

Callum Wilson I ve been told he might be available, I rang the manager up and was told no, so that s not going to happen.

Morocco 4-0 United States: Atlas Lions run riot to reach Olympic semi-finals

Morocco cruised into the semi-finals of the Olympic Games with a dominant 4-0 win over the United States on Friday.

Achraf Hakimi scored a stunner, with Soufiane Rahimi, Ilias Akhomach and El Mehdi Maouhoub also netting in an emphatic victory as the USA failed to mount a threat.

Nathan Harriel upended Rahimi in the box just before the half-hour mark and the forward made no mistake from 12 yards, stroking the ball just out of Patrick Schulte s reach into the bottom-left corner.

The USA should have equalised in the 59th minute but Walter Zimmermann s nod-down was skewed well wide by Miles Robinson from close range.

Just four minutes later, Morocco doubled their lead – Akhomach darted in behind to rifle Abde Ezzalzouli s drilled cross in at the near post.<…

Aguero is the Premier League´s best foreign import, says Shearer

Sergio Aguero is the best foreign import in Premier League history, according to Alan Shearer.

No player has scored more than Shearer s 260 Premier League goals but Aguero is more prolific than any overseas arrival aside from Arsenal icon Thierry Henry.

Since signing for Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2011, Aguero has hit 146 Premier League goals.

His treble in a 6-1 thumping of Huddersfield Town on Sunday saw Aguero move into the competition s top 10 all-time scoring list, leapfrogging former Arsenal and Manchester United forward Robin van Persie.

And Shearer believes Aguero deserves the title of the top flight s most successful foreign recruit, ahead of star names like Henry, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Marcelino confirms Athletic Bilbao departure

Athletic Bilbao will be searching for a new head coach ahead of next season after Marcelino confirmed he is leaving the club.

Marcelino took over at the Basque club on January 3, 2021. He took Athletic to the Supercopa de Espana title later that month.

Athletic also made the final of the 2021-22 edition of the tournament but lost to Real Madrid, while former Villarreal and Valencia coach Marcelino oversaw two Copa del Rey final defeats – one of which was delayed from the 2019-20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

‘Concerned’ Sarina Wiegman sweating on fitness of England midfielder Keira Walsh

England boss Sarina Wiegman remains “concerned” about injured Keira Walsh after the midfielder was stretchered off in the Lionesses’ 1-0 World Cup Group D victory over Denmark in Sydney.

Walsh, a 2023 Champions League winner with Barcelona, started every game of England’s triumphant Euro 2022 campaign and could clearly be seen telling the team’s medical staff “I’ve done my knee” after sliding to collect the ball late in the first half.

The worrying scene dampened the elated atmosphere that followed Lauren James’ sixth-minute opener, a maiden World Cup goal for the 21-year-old Chelsea forward.

Wiegman said: “Of course I’m concerned because she couldn’t walk off the pitch, but we don’t know yet, so we can’t take any assumptions. Let’s …

Militao: I have shown why I am at Real Madrid

Eder Militao believes his displays last season demonstrated why he is the most expensive defender in Real Madrid s history.

The Brazil international was signed from Porto in July 2019 for a fee of €50million just a year after joining the Portuguese side from Sao Paulo.

He struggled to make an impact in his first two campaigns at the Santiago Bernabeu, though, making just a combined 23 starts in LaLiga.

However, the departures of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane ahead of the 2021-22 season provided the 24-year-old with the perfect opportunity to cement his place at the heart of the Los Blancos backline.

He did that, making 50 appearances across all competitions as Carlo Ancelotti s side swept to a LaLiga and Champions League double.
